But two questions keep coming back — where exactly do you turn it on, and does it actually save battery?.

The second answer has a condition that is almost never mentioned.

Where to call

There are two places, and the order matters.

In the system

This is the main adjustment, and the one that solves most problems. On Android, it's in the settings, under the display or screen block, as "dark theme." On iPhone, it's in settings, under display and brightness, choosing between light and dark.

They both offer schedulingThe theme changes automatically at the time you choose, or in sync with the sunset. It's the setting most people want, but few activate.

In the app

Each app has its own option, usually within settings, under appearance or theme. And almost all offer three choices: on, off, and follow the system.

The third option is the most practical. With it selected in all apps, you only change one place — the system — and everything follows, including nighttime scheduling.

A word of warning: large apps frequently reorganize their menus, and yesterday's layout may not be the same today. When you can't find it, use the search function within the app's settings and look for "dark" or "theme." It's faster than hunting through submenus.

Battery life depends on your screen.

Here's the part that changes everything, and which rarely appears in tutorials.

OLED screen: Each pixel emits its own light. A black pixel is practically off, consuming no energy. On these screens, dark mode reduces consumption in a real and measurable way — and the more black on the screen and the higher the brightness, the greater the difference.

LCD screen: There's a backlight that's always on behind the entire screen, displaying whatever is being shown. Black on the screen is just a filter blocking that light—which remains on and continues to consume power. Here, dark mode is about visual comfort and virtually no battery drain.

To find out which model you have, check the model's technical specifications. As a general rule, mid-range and higher-end devices tend to be OLED, while entry-level devices tend to be LCD.

In other words, if someone promises double-digit battery savings just by turning on dark mode, that promise applies to some devices and not necessarily to yours.

The gain that benefits everyone.

Regardless of the screen type, dark mode provides visual comfort in low-light environments. A bright screen in the dark forces the pupil to constrict and tires the eyes quickly—which is why reading on a cell phone at night is so uncomfortable.

It's worth combining it with two other settings that help more than the theme itself: the blue light filter, which makes the screen warmer at night, and the well-calibrated automatic brightness. Many people attribute a sense of relief to dark mode that actually comes from lowering the brightness.

And there's a detail known to those with astigmatism: white text on a black background can be more difficult to read, with the letters appearing to spread out. If reading has become worse instead of better, it's not just your imagination, and there's no problem in keeping the subject matter clear.

When dark mode gets in the way

Under strong sun, A light theme is more legible. Contrast with the environment helps.

Editing photo, The dark background tricks the perception of brightness, and you tend to make the image appear brighter than it should be.

On websites that don't have a dark mode, The browser sometimes forces an automatic inversion that breaks the layout or makes text illegible. If a website looks strange, it's almost always due to this.

Beware of anyone who promises more than that.

Dark mode is official and is available within the apps. Changing the color of a social network—pink, purple, light blue—is not possible. as a resource.

Anything that promises this falls into one of three categories, and they all end badly:

This app asks for your login and password on a screen mimicking a social network. It's account theft, plain and simple.

A modified version of the app installed outside the official store, which violates the terms of use, usually results in account blocking and has no legitimate origin.

Video with edited screenshot, showing the result without demonstrating a working solution.

The rule is simple and there are no exceptions: no third-party app needs your social media password to change the screen color.

If you've already installed something like this, the procedure is to uninstall it, change your password, enable two-step verification, and check the list of open sessions on your account, closing any that you don't recognize.

Summary

Turn on dark mode in the system, scheduling it, and leave the apps on "follow the system" — it's the easiest setup. Expect battery savings only if your screen is OLED; otherwise, the gain is in comfort. And any promise beyond light and dark is behind your password.

O modo escuro deixou de ser novidade e virou padrão: sistema, redes sociais, navegador, mensageiro.
