You walk around the house looking at the refrigerator, the TV, the charger left plugged in, and you wonder which one is eating up your money.

The answer lies in a multiplication calculation. And a smart plug shows the rest live on your cell phone, in watts and kilowatt-hours. In this guide you'll learn how to do the calculation, measure each appliance with the app, and cut consumption where it matters most.

The calculation that reveals the villain: power x hours

Every appliance has its power rating written on the label, box, or manual, in watts (W). Multiply this by the hours of use to get the energy consumed in watt-hours. Divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit that appears on your electricity bill.

5,500 W electric shower, 30 minutes per day: 5,500 × 0.5 = 2,750 Wh, or 2.75 kWh per day. In 30 days, that's 82.5 kWh.

1500 W heater, 4 hours per night: 6 kWh per day, 180 kWh per month.

9W LED bulb, 5 hours per day: 45 Wh per day, 1.35 kWh per month.

Device in standby mode drawing 5 W, 24 hours a day: 120 Wh per day, 3.6 kWh per month. That seems like a small amount. Five such devices add up to 18 kWh.

Now take the price per kWh printed on your bill and multiply it. If the kWh costs 0.90, the 82.5 kWh from the shower become 74.25 for the month. The tariff changes from country to country and from city to city, but the bill is always the same.

The rule that emerges from this is: appliances that heat up, such as showers, heaters, irons, electric ovens, and dryers, have high power and weigh a lot even when used for short periods. Those that are left on all day, such as refrigerators, freezers, routers, and anything in standby mode, weigh a lot based on the hours they are used.

The refrigerator is cheating on the bill.

The refrigerator motor turns on and off all day. Multiplying the power rating on the label by 24 hours exaggerates the consumption. Many refrigerators have their energy consumption displayed on the efficiency label, in kWh per month or per year. To know how much yours consumes in your kitchen, with the door opening the way your family does, you need to measure it. That's where the smart plug comes in.

SmartLife: the power consumption of each device on your cell phone

SmartLife controls smart outlets, light bulbs, and other smart devices from many brands. It has over 50 million downloads and a 4.8 rating on Google Play, with more than 1.3 million reviews. In the Brazilian App Store, it has a 4.7 rating.

Plug it into a smart power outlet with energy metering, and the device plugged into it will then show your phone how much energy it consumes.

Live power: See how many watts the appliance draws in that second. Turn on the microwave and the number will appear on the screen.

Consumption history: Track the accumulated kWh by day and by month.

Turn it on and off remotely: Turn off the TV, video game console, or charger using your cell phone, from wherever you are.

Appointments: Program the outlet to cut off the power in the early morning hours, when no one is using anything.

When buying, look for compatibility with Smart Life or Tuya and the power consumption measurement function on the box. Also check the maximum current it can handle, such as 10 A or 16 A, and compare it with the device you will be plugging into it.

How to measure the energy consumption of an appliance, step by step.

Install SmartLife using the button at the top of this page and create your account.

Connect your phone to your home Wi-Fi. Most of these outlets use the 2.4 GHz network.

Plug the smart plug into the wall, tap the plus sign in the app, and add the device.

Plug the suspected device into the smart plug.

Let it sit for a full day. For the refrigerator, let it sit for a week, because it turns on and off all the time.

Open the app to access the power outlet, read the consumption in kWh, and multiply it by the kWh price on your bill.

Pass the baton to the next suspect and create a house ranking.

Electric showers and other appliances plugged directly into the wiring don't go through any outlets. For them, use the power × hours calculation.

TP-Link Tapo: another brand option

If you prefer TP-Link plugs, the app to use is Tapo. It has a 4.8 rating on Google Play, over 10 million downloads, and a 4.7 rating on the Brazilian App Store. With Tapo plugs that monitor energy consumption, it appears in the app. It also has a timer, scheduling, and an "away mode" that automatically turns the device on and off to make the house seem occupied.

No smart plug needed: use your home's meter.

The electricity meter also counts. Write down the number it shows, turn off everything you can, leave only the suspected appliance running for an hour, and write it down again. The difference is the consumption for that hour in kWh. Many energy distributors also have an app with the monthly consumption history.

Five cuts that appear on the bill

Shorter shower: In a 5,500 W shower, every 10 minutes less per day saves approximately 0.92 kWh. Over a month, that's 27.5 kWh.

LED instead of incandescent: Replacing a 60W light bulb with a 9W LED bulb, which is on for 5 hours a day, cuts 7.65 kWh per month, just from that bulb.

End of standby mode: Unplug it, or use the smart plug, which keeps the light on all night.

Refrigerator tightly closed: Check the door seal, don't store hot food inside, and leave space behind the door for air to circulate.

Ironing all at once: Gather all your clothes together and iron them all in the same session, instead of heating up the iron every day.

Which app to choose?

Application

Best for

Note on Google Play

Downloads

SmartLife

Measure consumption using compatible outlets from various brands.

4,8

50 mi+

TP-Link Tapo

Tapo outlets with energy monitoring.

4,8

10 mi+

Power count × hours

Shower and appliances connected directly to the wiring.

–

–

Light meter

Check the energy consumption of a device without spending any money.

–

–

If you want to find out today who's draining your bill, stick with SmartLife: it works on Android and iPhone, communicates with many brands of outlets, and shows the consumption of each device in real time.
