Your heart races. You scroll up and down, and nothing.

Take a breath. On Google Photos, iPhones, and Samsung Gallery, deleted photos don't disappear instantly. They end up in a trash bin that almost no one opens and sit there for 30 days. This guide shows you where each of these trash bins is located, how to retrieve a photo that arrived via WhatsApp, and what to try when the trash bin has already been emptied.

Google Photos: the trash can that stores the photos from your account.

Google Photos has surpassed 10 billion downloads and has a 4.6 rating on Google Play, with over 54 million reviews. In the Brazilian App Store, it has a 4.9 rating. It works on Android and iPhone and saves a copy of your photos to your Google account.

30-day trash can: Deleted photos remain in the trash for 30 days before disappearing permanently. Since September 2026, this timeframe also applies to backed-up photos. Previously it was 60 days, so don't delay.

Complete restoration: The photo returns to your phone's gallery, to your account, and to the albums where it was located.

Locked file and folder: Photos saved in these two locations disappear from the main screen without being deleted.

Automatic backup: With backup enabled, each new photo is uploaded to the cloud and survives until you change phones.

How to recover a photo from the Google Photos trash.

Open Google Photos. If you don't already have the app, install it using the button at the top of this page.

Tap the tab Collections. In older versions of the app, it's called... Library or Albums.

Open the Bin.

Tap and hold the photo you want back. Tap the others to select more than one.

Tap on Restore. Done: the photo is back in the gallery.

Didn't find it? Check out also the File and the Locked folder From the app. If you use more than one Google account, tap your profile picture, switch accounts, and check the trash folder of the other account. On a computer, the same path is at photos.google.com, in the Trash menu.

iPhone: the Deleted album

On an iPhone, a deleted photo goes to the photo album. Deleted and stays there for 30 days.

Open the Photos app.

Scroll to the section Utilities. In previous versions of iOS it is called More Items.

Tap on Deleted and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or your iPhone passcode.

Tap on Select, select the photos and tap on Recover.

With iCloud Photos enabled, the recovered photo will also be saved to the iPad and Mac of the same account.

Samsung Gallery: The Recycle Bin Hidden in the Menu

Those who own a Samsung Galaxy and use Samsung's own Gallery app have a separate trash bin. Deleted items remain there for 30 days.

Open the app Gallery.

Tap on Menu, the icon with three lines.

Choice Bin and tap on Edit.

Select the photos and tap on Restore.

The Recycle Bin needs to be enabled to save photos. If it doesn't appear in the menu, enable it in the Gallery settings to protect yourself next time. Phones from other brands also have a Recycle Bin in the gallery: look for Recycle Bin or Recently Deleted in the app menu.

WhatsApp photos: go back to the conversation

Did you delete a photo from your gallery that arrived via WhatsApp? It might be waiting in your chat.

Open the conversation where the photo was sent.

Tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen.

Enter Media, links and docs.

Did you find the photo? Open it and save it again on your phone.

Not there? Ask the sender to send it again. It takes five seconds. Those who back up their conversations to Google Drive or iCloud can also reinstall WhatsApp and restore the backup: the conversations will return as they were on the day of the backup, including the photos.

DiskDigger: scanning stops when the trash can has already been emptied.

Has your trash bin been empty for more than 30 days? On Android, DiskDigger searches your phone for what's left. The app has over 100 million downloads and a 3.1 rating on Google Play.

Search without root access: On regular cell phones, it searches the internal memory, the thumbnail cache, and the system databases.

Permission: The app is requesting access to all files. Grant it permission, otherwise it won't be able to see the folders.

Where are you going? Whatever he finds can be sent to Google Drive, Dropbox, via email, or saved to another folder on his phone.

DiskDigger works with the data trace left in memory, and each phone keeps a different trace. Run the search as soon as possible after noticing the loss.

How to never lose a photo again

On Android: Turn on Google Photos backup. Every Google account comes with 15 GB of free storage, divided between Gmail, Drive, and Photos.

On iPhone: Turn on iCloud Photos or Google Photos backup. iCloud comes with 5GB of free storage.

On WhatsApp: Enable chat backup in Chat settings.

Before cleaning your phone: Check if the photos have already been uploaded to the cloud.

Which app to choose?

Application

Best for

Note on Google Play

Downloads

Google Photos

Restore from the trash and keep everything backed up.

4,6

10 billion+

iPhone photos

Recover from the Deleted album

–

–

Samsung Gallery

Trash can specifically designed for Galaxy phones.

–

–

Whatsapp

Photos that came up in conversations

4,7

10 billion+

DiskDigger

Android scan after emptying the trash.

3,1

100 mi+

If you want an app just to protect your photos from today onwards, stick with Google Photos: it has a 30-day trash bin, automatic backup, and works on Android and iPhone.
