The video freezes, the photo takes forever to upload, and you start to distrust the device.

Often, 5G is turned off in a hidden setting, just three taps away. For it to appear, three things need to happen: a 5G-enabled phone, a plan enabled by your carrier, and a 5G signal where you are. In this guide, you'll turn the option on in Android and iPhone, check coverage on the map, and measure the speed with a single tap.

First of all: does your cell phone have 5G?

iPhone: 5G arrived with the iPhone 12. From the 12 onwards, all models have it.

Android: Find the exact model in Settings > About phone Check the manufacturer's specifications or the box. If the network option lists 5G, as you'll see below, the device has it.

Plan and chip: Open your carrier's app or call customer service and confirm that your plan and SIM card are enabled for 5G.

How to activate 5G on Android

On the Samsung Galaxy:

Open Settings.

Tap on Connections and then in Mobile networks.

Enter Network mode.

Choose the option that starts with 5G, such as 5G/LTE/3G/2G (automatic connection).

On Google Pixel and other Android devices with similar menus:

Open Settings > Network and internet.

Tap on SIMs And choose the SIM card you use for internet.

Enter Preferred network type and select 5G.

The names vary slightly from brand to brand. If you can't find it, type "network" or "5G" in the search bar at the top of Settings and the shortcut will appear. With dual SIM cards, adjust the SIM card that is set to mobile data.

How to activate 5G on iPhone

Open Adjustments and tap on Cell phone.

Tap on Cellular Data Options. With two chips, first select the line you want to adjust.

Enter Voice and Data.

Choice 5G Automatic or 5G Connected.

In Automatic 5G mode, the iPhone uses 5G when it makes a difference and switches back to LTE when it doesn't, to save battery. In 5G On mode, the device stays on 5G whenever there is a signal, and the battery drains faster. For everyday use, Automatic is the starting point.

Check the coverage on the map.

5G option enabled but no icon? Check if there's 5G coverage where you are. The carrier's website shows coverage by address. Speedtest has a map tab, Speedtest Maps, compiled with tests from real users, which shows where 5G is available and compares carriers in your area. If the map shows 5G on the street above and not on yours, the problem isn't your phone.

Thick walls, elevators, and basements can drop the signal. Test near a window or on the street before drawing any conclusions.

Speedtest: Measure your 5G speed.

Speedtest by Ookla has already accumulated more than 55 billion speed tests worldwide. The app has over 100 million downloads and a 4.7 rating on Google Play, with nearly 1.5 million reviews. It also has a 4.7 rating on the Brazilian App Store.

Download and upload: The speed for downloading and uploading files.

Ping in three moments: Latency is the number of times the connection is idle, downloading, and uploading. It's what determines if video calls and online games freeze.

Jitter: It shows whether the connection is stable or fluctuating.

Video test: It tells you the maximum resolution your network can handle, the loading time, and whether the video will stutter.

History: It saves all the tests so you can compare the day, time, and location.

Coverage maps: The performance of each operator, using real-world data.

How to test 5G speed, step by step.

Install Speedtest using the button at the top of this page.

Turn off Wi-Fi. Otherwise, the test will measure your home internet connection, not the internet from your SIM card.

Check if the 5G icon appears at the top of the screen.

Open the app and tap the large button in the center.

Read the download, upload, and ping speeds when the test is complete.

Now switch to LTE, 4G, in the settings, run another test and compare. The difference is on your screen, in the numbers.

nPerf and Opensignal: a second opinion

O nPerf It has a 4.8 rating on Google Play and has over 10 million downloads. In addition to speed, it tests website loading times and streaming quality, and includes a coverage map by carrier.

O Opensignal It has a 4.5 rating on Google Play, has over 10 million downloads, and shows no ads. Its map shows signal strength street by street, and the app records how much time you spent on 3G, 4G, 5G, and without signal. The compass points to the direction from which the strongest signal comes.

5G hasn't appeared yet? Check this out.

Airplane mode: Turn the phone off and on again to allow it to search for a network. If that doesn't solve the problem, restart the device.

Update: Install the latest version of the system. It includes network and carrier settings.

Battery saving: The power saving mode may turn off 5G to conserve energy. Disable it and test again.

Chip: Ask your carrier if your SIM card is compatible with 5G.

Which app to choose?

Application

Best for

Note on Google Play

Downloads

Speedtest

Measure speed and view 5G coverage by carrier.

4,7

100 mi+

nPerf

Full test with browsing and streaming.

4,8

10 mi+

Opensignal

Street-by-street traffic light map, without advertisements.

4,5

10 mi+

Phone settings

Turn on 5G in Network Mode or Voice and Data Mode.

–

–

If you want an app just to clear up any doubts today, stick with Speedtest: it measures your speed, shows you where 5G is available, and keeps a history of each test, on both Android and iPhone.
